The origin of the word symbolic lies in a greek word meaning “to bring things together”. Diabolic means “to separate” or “to throw things apart”. So being symbolic (or communicating with symbols), is attaching things to create bonds. While being diabolic (or communicating diabolically), is detaching things that are bonded.
