Symbolic / Diabolic

The origin of the word symbolic lies in a greek word meaning “to bring things together”. Diabolic means “to separate” or “to throw things apart”.  So being symbolic (or communicating with symbols), is attaching things to create bonds.   While being diabolic (or communicating diabolically), is detaching things that are bonded.  Credited to Robert Greene .

Career Drift

Career Drift is a concept which is not widely discussed but is widely experienced (in fact, you may be experiencing it right now).  Career Drift is a passive force that can affect anyone in any career. It is the gradual (and often unconscious) transition away from the career path that you’d really like to have.  […]

My AI experiment

I recently teased my plans to write a feature article for QLA with the help of AI.  I’m pleased to share that I’ve run my experiment and I’ll share the results tomorrow! Here’s what I wanted to test: Can I write a quality article with the help of AI in 30 minutes? I’ve wanted to […]

It’s your job

“Because it’s your job” isn’t a great reason for someone to do something. For starters, the “something” may be just one thing out of lots of things involved with a role. If the “something” is prioritised, where does the “it’s your job” reasoning lie with all those other things that would need to be deferred? […]

Decision-making biases

Time marches on

We frequently comment on how quickly time is passing, but never in a good way.  For instance, have you had the conversation yet where someone asked where January went?  Or maybe you’ve seen chocolate eggs in the shops and wondered, “Is it Easter already”?  This post isn’t meant to shock.  Quite the opposite, in fact.  […]

Serving your audience

In everything we do, there will be different stakeholders that will influence our actions and our decisions.  While some stakeholders may be crucial in realising your goals, servicing their interests should not detract from the impact you’re trying to make. If you put their needs over the end user, you risk diluting your value and […]

Your next step

When you want to make a change in your career, you can get caught up on wanting the next step to be the right step. But a good way to think about it is can your next step be a better step in your career? It’s unlikely that your next step will be exactly what […]

Doing nothing is doing something

Sometimes doing nothing is the best course of action.  And sometimes we do nothing because we don’t know what to do, not realising this is an action in itself. .

If you were in my position

When seeking advice from people we’re aspiring towards, we typically ask them to share their experiences so we can apply them to our own pursuits.  Everyone’s path is unique, and the conditions that lead to their success may not be replicable.  So along with asking them about the path they travelled, it’s a great thought […]
