Whenever I had a particularly challenging day at work, I would carry my work-self with me when I left the office. It didn’t matter if I was going home or catching up with friends – I wasn’t able to show up fully because I was holding onto baggage from the day that was.
I shared this with a friend and they asked me what my Third Space was. I didn’t know what they meant, so they explained that whenever we transition from one space to another space, we carry part of our mindset and emotional state with us.
So to show up fully in your next space, it helps to consider the transition as a “Third Space” where you can reset and collect your thoughts.
Even if you’re rushing between spaces (like back-to-back meetings), there is always a window that’s available to you which you can use to prepare yourself.
This recommendation has continued to serve me, and I hope it helps you too.
