Self-enforcing guardrails

It’s more important to focus on what you want to achieve rather than how you will achieve it. Because as soon as you become clear on what you want, hard realities will emerge that will act as guardrails on your journey.

Let’s play this out with an example.

What would you like to change in your life?

I want to get really fit.

Awesome! What does this mean when you go out with friends?

Well, I still want to be social, but I don’t want to drink.

Great! How do you think this will impact your friends?

I’d like to think my friends would be understanding.

That’s awesome. They’ll understand if you bring them on your journey.

But what if I keep catching up with my friends and find myself having a few drinks?

What do you think would happen?

Well, I guess then I won’t get really fit.

Cool. So do you really want to get really fit?

Yes I do.

Then there’s your answer. If you want to be really fit, it doesn’t mean you must stop being social with your friends. It’s just when you are social, you know that if you drink you won’t get fit.

As you can see, it’s not too challenging to make decisions when you are clear on the path you want to take. Because once you are clear, the guardrails start to become self-enforcing.
