Recruiting team members

When you need to grow your team, don’t just look for someone that fills a desired job spec. Look for someone that can join the most amazing team.

You are currently part of a group that are clear on what they want to achieve and are passionate about working together to achieve it (even if it’s currently a team of one). So you want applicants to know this opportunity is something more than a usual role, and you want them to appreciate the significance of their potential contribution.

In your conversations with applicants, describe why the contributions of the current team members are so significant, and why this new role will add so much more to the group. Go beyond the practical elements of the role, and align each applicant’s long-term aspirations with the aspirations of your team.

You shouldn’t create superficial expectations or promote a dynamic that isn’t real. You are simply giving the applicants an understanding of what you and your team embodies.

When you consistently do this, everyone that joins the team will have greater aspirations about what is possible and contribute in a more meaningful way.
