How can I help?

When someone shares their idea with you, a great way to respond is by asking “How can I help?”

Doing so will determine if their idea comes with a clear ask, which demonstrates if the person is simply soundboarding their thoughts or whether they’ve approached you for tangible action.

This question will also prevent you from jumping in with your opinion, which may not be necessary, valuable or well-received. Responding from a position of support is non-threatening and will make the person view you more favourably.

It’s important to note you’re not obligated to act on their suggestion for assistance, as you still hold the power to decide what support you’re willing or able to provide. But if you feel this question is too direct, feel free to soften it in your own way – some good alternatives could be “What support would you like?” or “What are the next steps you’re looking to take?”
