There will come a time in your career when you want to ask for a higher salary.
This moment may feel confronting, but it gets a lot easier when you prepare a proposal that explains why the pay rise is warranted.
Your proposal should be written for the benefit of the key decision maker(s) because their reasons for awarding the pay rise will be somewhat particular.
Here are a few factors you should consider when writing your proposal. This list isn’t exhaustive, but it should provide a good starting point.
What is the scope of your role? If your role has changed over time but your salary has not, what salary would equivalent roles be entitled to?
What is the process of the organisation? If you can understand how the organisation awards pay rises, you can structure your proposal within this process to better your chance of success.
What value do you add to the organisation? Salaries are effectively a share of the value you’re contributing to an organisation. So the better you can identify the value you’re providing, the easier it is for the decision maker to recognise your reasonable share.
