It’s amazing how comfortable we can be with an option when we see it as the only one, and how easy it is to dismiss its implications.
I had a great session this week with someone who’s about to graduate and is considering doing Honours.
They were leaning towards doing Honours because many people had recommended it, yet they hadn’t explored other professional opportunities.
A decision may seem easy to make when it’s framed in a casual way.
But this shouldn’t be a casual decision.
Choosing to do Honours means choosing to dedicate a year of your life to an intensive pursuit that requires a lot of sacrifice.
This commitment should warrant a compelling reason, and if you don’t have one, it should cause you to think pretty hard about why you’re seeing it as a singular option.
This post isn’t a case about doing or not doing Honours.
It’s about being very aware of how casually we can enter into long term commitments.
