False positives

When Kobe Bryant was playing professional basketball, he only slept 3-4 hours per night.

People inspired by Kobe may have equated this lack of sleep to success and tried to emulate this quality in their own lives.

Yet when Kobe retired, he acknowledged that his sleep routine was horrendous and it may have worked against his performance.

We are always striving to learn from people that have succeeded, but we can run into problems when we take what they say at face value.

When you are inspired by the words or actions of others, it’s important to consider how effective these qualities will be for our own success before adopting them.

  • How feasible is it that this one action was a key driver of their success?
  • To what extent did this one action contribute to their success?
  • To what extent could this one action contribute to your own success?
  • How feasible is it for you to adopt this action?
