2021 has begun! Which means you’ve probably heard the expression “New Year, New You!” (or something similar).
I am not a fan of this expression. No one is waking up on January 1 completely transformed. But that doesn’t mean the expression doesn’t have power.
As humans, we do an amazing job segmenting Time. The calendar is a remarkably powerful illusion which everyone has agreed upon, and this serves humanity wonderfully well. The issue though is when we create our own illusions around Time which don’t serve us.
We look towards “2021” because it will be completely different to “2020”. Or we look towards “February” to start a new project because things are slower in “January”. Or we look to start our new diet after the weekend because we want to “start Monday right”. And perhaps the greatest illusion of Time we maintain is how much we expect to do “tomorrow”.
But Time doesn’t care about any of this. It just keeps ticking along. And what’s truly amazing is that you can start something this very moment! You don’t need to wait for a new week, or a new month, or a new year. The Time is always right to begin!
