I don’t know

This week a client accepted a major job offer.

But then came the doubt.

They asked me, “Do you think it’s the right move?”

To which I replied.

“I don’t know.”

And the truth is, no one does.

But here’s what I did know:

They understood the upside and downside of their current career trajectory.

They understood the upside and downside of this new career trajectory.

And when we compared the two, the new opportunity had a much more attractive balance.

That’s the decision.

Yes, the new job might not go to plan.

Yes, the old one might have been better than it seemed.

But this was an acceptable risk when considered alongside the potential upside.

If you gather as much relevant information as possible about what the future could look like, you’re in a great position to make a more informed decision.

That’s the approach that has served me and my clients really well over the years.

And explaining “I don’t know” was the comfort my client needed to hear at that moment.
