Let’s be clear.
Your current skill set is what it is.
That doesn’t mean you can’t grow.
But right now, there’s a limit to what you bring, and it’s important to know EXACTLY where that line is.
Because when you go for a role, there are really only two paths.
Either your skill set MATCHES what they’re looking for.
In which case, your job is to clearly explain that to key decision-makers.
You must show them what you bring and how it aligns with what they need.
OR
Your skill set DOESN’T match, and that requires a completely different approach.
Because for them to hire you, THEY need to take a risk.
They need to believe you can grow into the role.
They need to bet on potential, not certainty.
But here’s the thing.
You can’t control their appetite for risk.
But you can make their decision easier.
You must show them how you learn.
You must show them examples where you’ve taken on a stretch role and delivered.
You must give them confidence that while you’re not the perfect fit today, you’re their best bet for tomorrow.
And if that risk still feels too high for them?
Then it’s your job to find out what you were missing.
They will tell you where your gaps are.
You then need to build those skills and come back again to showcase them.
That’s the real path to career growth.
Don’t hide the gaps.
And stop hoping that you’ll be picked.
Get very clear on what you bring to the table and how that aligns with an opportunity.
The better you can do this, the more likely others will bet on you.
