Many people don’t leave their job because they worry about this:
Having a short stint on their resume.
If this is you, I pose this hypothetical.
What if you REALLY didn’t like your job?
Let’s say you changed roles and it only took a couple of weeks to realise:
“Oh damn… This is not for me at ALL”.
What would you do?
Would you stick it out for another 2 years, just so your resume “looks good”?
No.
You’d want out as soon as you can.
But I can hear you thinking…
“Surely that example is different to my new role that I’m just tolerating?”
Yes it is.
Because in the first example you would actually take desired action to be in a better position.
I’ve coached professionals to advance their careers for over 5 years.
Lots of them have worried about looking for a job too soon after getting their current one.
But with my encouragement, they looked.
And guess what happens when they find a role that’s better than the one they’re in?
Even if it means having a short stint on their resume?
They accept the new offer.
The more worried you are about change, the less action you will take.
In my opinion, the imagined downside of having a short stint on your resume doesn’t compare to the actual downside of sticking it out in a role you don’t want.
