Quick career update… I’m now a Lecturer-in-Charge at UNSW!
It’s an awesome culture, and here’s why.
Support shows up in action and not just in words.
Here are 5 things I’ve experienced with UNSW Business School that can help advance your career.
1. Build on What Came Before You
One of the first things I noticed stepping into this role was how much had already been built. You’re inheriting a fantastic knowledge base which you’re then tasked to add your spin to.
📌In your career, it can feel like you’re stepping into a new role, when really you’re building on what’s already come before you. The best thing you can do is appreciate this history and then make the role your own (to be passed onto the next person in time).
2. There’s More Support Than You Think
Taking on this role made me more aware of how much support exists around us. There are people, systems and resources in place that only become visible when you’re in a position to see how everything fits together.
📌In your career, it can feel like we’re working hard on an island, when in reality there’s amazing help available for you.
3. Passionate People Rock
Most students at UNSW will never meet the people working behind the scenes to improve their learning experience. But stepping into the role of Lecturer-in-charge, I get to see all the amazing people who are really invested in student outcomes. The UNSW Business School has an incredible team of people, and I’m grateful that I get to engage with them more.
📌Always remember that in any workplace, there are passionate people doing incredible things to support you in your role. Do your best to seek them out if you can.
4. Feedback Isn’t a Threat, it’s a Tool
Stepping into the Lecturer-in-Charge role, you get the full picture from students about what’s working and what can be improved. It’s awesome. Just don’t take it personally. Feedback is valuable when it can be applied to making things better rather than taking it personally.
📌In your career, the better you are at giving and receiving feedback, the better actions you can take and the better outcomes you’ll achieve.
5. Great Companies Create Opportunities and Back You
What I’ve really appreciated about UNSW Business School is how willing they are to give people exposure to new roles and responsibilities. This is my Third Term teaching, and I’m grateful to be leading a course.
📌An awesome culture is created when companies invest in their people so that the whole team is strengthened. It’s a great reminder of what’s possible when an organisation sees development as a shared pursuit.
