Captain Planet

I sometimes wonder how much the dramatic shift in the climate debate today is because of the children’s show Captain Planet.

As a kid, it was cool to watch Captain Planet and the Planeteers protect the planet and beat the eco-villains. The Planeteers were kids with awesome powers, but every episode would end with an easy planet-saving tip that any kid could do.

Plus the theme song was an absolute banger (I bet you’re singing it in your head now).

And now this generation of kids is a generation of adults wanting to see more done for the planet.

I’m not sure how accurate this theory is, but it does make me appreciate how generational change is possible from the things we are doing today.

PS. And here’s a fun fact. Duke Nukem was a villain in Captain Planet but is not affiliated with the “Duke Nukem” video games. Captain Planet created Duke Nukem first, but the show didn’t trademark the name.
