Many people ask for career coaching at QLA because they’re unsatisfied in their current role and are actively thinking about making a change.
Yet you don’t need to get to this point of dissatisfaction to prompt thinking about your career development.
Considering your career horizons is a great way of understanding your current position. Here’s a quick exercise that will really help with this.
Where do you want to be or what do you want to be doing in:
- 1 month?
- 1 year?
- 2 years?
- 3 years?
- 5 years?
- 10 years?
How clearly did you see yourself in each of these horizons?
The point of this exercise isn’t about knowing what your future will bring. It’s simply giving yourself the time and space to consider how your career could play out.
You may be very clear on what you want in the next 2 years, but beyond that is a little fuzzy. Or you may realise that you don’t want to be in the same position in 5 years time. Or you may reconnect with a long-term dream you had for yourself and gain motivation to pursue it.
There are no right or wrong answers here. Indeed, you don’t need to have an answer for every horizon. The most important thing is just asking yourself the questions.
