In order to make decisions, we need facts. But it’s hard to source every fact that’s relevant to a decision, so to fill the gaps we also need assumptions.
Facts are things we accept as true because we can prove it to be true. Assumptions are things we accept as true without proof.
The problem though is that our assumptions can be just as powerful as the facts in determining our behaviour. And we are prone to treating our assumptions as facts more than we realise.
So the quicker we can turn assumptions into facts, the better our decision-making will be.
With every decision you make, it is very helpful to identify your assumptions, and then have yourself or others challenge them.
