When debating a topic, how open are you to having your opinion challenged?
For many people, when they say “let’s have a debate”, they really mean “allow me the chance to change your opinion”.
They may feel like they’re entering the debate with an open-mind, but they really are seeking confirmation and reinforcement of their perspective.
If you are truly entering a debate with an open-mind, it means you are comfortable with conflict – not with the other person, but the conflict that arises within ourselves when our opinions are challenged and we choose to reassess our perspective.
Confirmation is easier. But internal conflict is far more rewarding and fulfilling.
