De-escalate, then resolve

If you’re in an argument that’s growing heated, the immediate focus should be on restoring calm.

This is because both sides are feeding off each other’s negative energy in the pursuit of acknowledgment and validation.

There needs to be a circuit breaker to break this compounding cycle. If one side suddenly has a caring nature and focuses on wellbeing rather than the argument, it forces the other side to reflect on their behaviour too.

Once calm is restored, you’ll be in a much better position to resolve the argument.
