Declining job offers

The amazing thing about applying for jobs is that you aren’t obligated to accept the position if it’s offered to you.

But this isn’t a common realisation.

On some level, we feel obligated to accept a job that we apply for, because why else would we be applying for it?

Remember that you should have very clear terms of engagement when you search for jobs, and it’s very important to know your potential employer’s terms of engagement too. If you discover during the interview process that these don’t align, you shouldn’t proceed.

You must also remember that when you receive a job offer, you shouldn’t say yes right away. The offer is really the start of the negotiation process, and you should feel empowered to consider better terms. Knowing that you can walk away from an offer will help you understand what you really want to agree to.

This empowered mindset will also help you tremendously to keep applying for positions you may not otherwise apply for. You never know where you’ll discover amazing opportunities, so it’s in your best interest to keep applying for positions without feeling obligated to commit.
