Distracting yourself

You’re working on a task and making great progress.

Then suddenly someone distracts you, needing your input for something unrelated to your task.

How does that make you feel?

Probably a little annoyed and frustrated. Their distraction has cost you time and effort, and you’d rather wish they hadn’t.

But what happens when you’re the one that causes the distraction?

Do you also feel annoyed and frustrated?

Or do you rationalise your decision and not think of the consequences?

I’m guessing the latter.

Which is fine if the self-inflicted distractions are seldom.

The problem, though, is we are prone to distracting ourselves much more than other people do.

So what would it mean if we responded to our own distractions in the same way we do with others?
