When you are seeking greater opportunities within the company you’re working for, it’s important to share your ambitions with your manager or key decision-makers.
And when you do, pay very close attention to their response.
Alarm bells should go off in your head if they respond with any variation of: “Once you do your time in this role, then we can talk”.
On the surface, you may think this is a good thing, as it seems they are interested in your progression.
But unless they provide firm details around your career prospects, you’re essentially left in limbo.
This sentiment can also sound like, “Let’s talk about this next year”, or “There is nothing available currently but something should open up”, or “Let’s see how things develop”.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t serve time in a role in order to progress. It simply means you must be proactive to advance in your career, and if your manager provides vague responses about your prospects, then you should really question how things will change for you.
