I was taught that you should only make a speech if you want to change the world. You may think this is a little extreme, but it’s a very powerful concept.
It doesn’t mean that you should only make a speech if you want to inspire a movement or a revolution. It means that every time you communicate, you impact the world around you. Whether it’s giving instructions or giving hope, everything you say matters. And the audience doesn’t have to be in the millions – you can have a profound impact on an audience of one (just ask any parent).
Once you have this appreciation, you begin to look at what you say from a different light. No longer is it just a presentation at your weekly staff meeting – it’s an opportunity to affirm your shared vision. No longer is it an obligatory toast at the end of an evening – it’s a chance to provide guests with a sense of gratitude for the moment they’ve shared. No longer is it a lone voice at a community meeting – it’s a vital message that can change the way we live together.
