In 2006, researchers at the University of Newcastle ran an experiment in their communal coffee room which used an honesty box. The researchers wanted to test if the contributions to the honesty box were higher if a picture of eyes was placed beside the price list.
They discovered that people paid nearly three times as much for their drinks when eyes were displayed rather than a control image.
We can all appreciate how our accountability increases when we’re being watched. But what’s amazing about this study is how much our accountability can increase when the social cues aren’t real.
