Do you prefer receiving feedback or do you prefer receiving validation? There is a difference, but both are perfectly acceptable!
Feedback is information used for improvement.
Validation is an affirmation or approval of your actions.
If you love being told you’re doing a great job, then own it! Or if you love critical feedback, that’s awesome too! The problem arises when we feel we have to ask for something different from our preference.
Are you prone to asking for feedback, when really you’re wanting a pat on the back? There’s nothing wrong with wanting the latter, and you shouldn’t feel that you should shy away asking.
Or maybe you’re part of a team that enjoys giving a lot of encouragement, but you’re wanting a critical review at times. That’s perfectly ok too, and your focus should be how to ask for the critical feedback while preserving the team culture, rather than not asking at all.
We all operate differently, so be clear with yourself what your preference is. Then be sure to make this known to others, as you’ll be more likely to receive it.
