Sometimes when we decide to make a change, we feel compelled to announce this to the world.
I’m not sure what compels us to do so. Maybe it’s because declarations make us feel more committed? Maybe it’s because we enjoy the congratulations before we’ve begun? I’m not sure.
But I’ve done this. Many times. And unfortunately, more often than not, the strategy fails.
The announcement does little to reinforce the commitment, but comes with the downside of a public display where your words don’t align with action.
Here’s something that does work for me.
If you commit to a change, that’s awesome. Just start. Whether it’s getting out of bed, or going on a diet, or exploring new opportunities. Just start. And then when you have some momentum behind you, bring others along on the journey.
