Focus

It’s interesting when people describe focus like a dial in relation to their goals, like something that can be turned up or down.

“I’m not getting the results I want because I’m lacking focus right now”.

Or

“I’ll start getting the results I want once I get more focused”.

But focus is really a constant.

We only have a certain amount of attention while we’re awake, and so our focus is on whatever we choose to do in every moment.

Watching TV takes the same amount of focus as going for a walk.

Ordering takeaway takes the same amount of focus as preparing a healthy meal.

Getting a coffee takes the same amount of focus as writing that email.

Granted, each of these tasks may require different energy and effort, but focus is the same across the board.

So don’t lean on focus as something that can be ‘dialed up’ if you’re running behind.

Treat focus as a fixed resource that is allocated.
