Follow-up with a timeline

If you are waiting on work that is overdue from someone, it’s best to frame your follow-up with a timeline.

Doing so will provide the person doing the work context about why it’s important for you. It will also require them to acknowledge whether the deadline is feasible.

This is more effective than just highlighting that their work is taking longer than expected.

And it’s much better than asking when it will be done as that’s an invitation for them to continue on their terms.

Your follow-up doesn’t need to be extensive. Just make sure you include a firm time and ask them to address it. Eg. “How is your work going? Can it be finished by Thursday?”
