Framing matters

A lot of people approach me to ask how they can run their own business.

But interestingly, no one has approached me to ask how they can run their own successful business.

You may think this point is obvious and there’s no need to say you want your business to be successful.

But I would argue that this mindset shift is very, very important.

When people say they want to run their own business, they’re usually doing so for reasons like going out on their own, or being their own boss, or making their own impact.

But when people say they want to run a successful business, then it means all of their decisions are motivated by a specific metric like the bottom line, and all other desires are simply bonuses.

So when you’re defining a goal, think really clearly about how you frame it.

Do you want to run a business? Or do you want to run a successful business?
