Go to tender

If you need a job done by someone else, consider seeking more than one quote for the work. This is especially important in your career or business when the work is ongoing in nature.

We can be prone to limiting our search to a singular candidate, but encouraging multiple bids is helpful in many ways:

  • You will likely achieve better terms, like lower costs or extra features.
  • You will gain different perspectives about executing on your desired vision.
  • You will better understand the capabilities of those that bid for the work.
  • You will enter into an engagement with more clearly defined terms.
  • You will have a wider range of accessible alternatives if the engagement ends.

Seeking extra bids takes more effort, and it may feel uncomfortable for some people (especially if you’ve already formed a connection with one person to do the work). But if you limit your search to one candidate, you risk entering into an engagement that isn’t optimal or sustainable.

You have more to gain by going beyond the first bid.
