Going out on your own

I believe that inside us all is a desire to carve our own path. That may involve working within an existing structure, or it may mean going out on your own entirely.

I’ve been fortunate to do both, and many of my favourite discussions are with those that are keen to navigate between these two worlds.

This particular post is for those looking to make the leap from an existing structure into the unknown.

It can be hard to describe to people what it’s like going out on your own, but one way to look at it is consistently presenting to an audience of zero.

I highly recommend reading this article by The Verge, which shines a light on parts of the journey that people may not appreciate.

This isn’t meant to discourage you. Not at all. For those that are considering your own path, I think that’s amazing and I’m simply providing perspectives of what may be involved so you’re most prepared.

The article is a long read, but worth it. Here’s an excerpt:

Starting a career on platforms like Twitch often means spending some time broadcasting to absolutely no one. Discoverability is an issue: when you log into Twitch, the most visible people are those who already have a large following. While there are tools to find lesser-known streamers, most people starting out without built-in audiences from other platforms or supportive friends and family end up staring at a big, fat zero on their viewership counter.
