In 2008, the song Hallelujah topped the UK charts because Alexandra Burke chose to cover it for winning X Factor.
Such was the outcry of a reality star covering such a classic, that a group of concerned music aficionados pushed Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley to the number 2 spot at the same time.
It’s amazing that the same song held the top 2 spots. But it’s even more amazing that both songs were covers of the original Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.
There’s no rhyme or reason for why one version is better than the other. It purely came down to the shared opinion of two groups.
This demonstrates what groups can accomplish when there is a clear motivation and ability to take action. It matters less about how objective the reasons are, and more that there is a rival on the other side.
