Helping people create change

When trying to get people to take action, draw on common language and learned behaviours as much as possible.

Any change comes with a level of resistance, but you can reduce this resistance if your communication and desired actions are familiar to your audience.

With language, use terms that are known and simple to understand. If your language is too vague or too technical, it requires a lot of extra effort from your audience to understand what you mean.

Likewise with the desired actions, choose ones that your audience already knows how to do. Any new skills or behaviours will make the change harder.

This may seem obvious, but you’ll be surprised how complicated a process can become if not considered from the perspective of the audience.

Put yourself in the shoes of those who you want to influence. What are the easiest things they need to hear and do to make it happen?
