Highlight your preference

Have you ever tried to arrange a meeting with someone and felt caught in a loop where you’re both saying “I don’t mind”?

This happens when both parties are trying to be as accommodating as possible, or if both parties don’t have sufficient constraints to guide their decision.

To make this process easier, when you provide your availability be sure to specify one option as a preference. This option may not actually be a preference for you – the important thing is that an option is singled out.

This helps the other person determine if that particular option works for them, and if it doesn’t, it still allows them to propose an alternative option within the availability you shared.

This example is based on organising meetings, but the principle is applicable for any decision you need to make with another person.
