How to consider a job offer

When you receive an offer and you’re deciding what to do, here’s an exercise I’ve found really helpful.

Imagine you’ve received another offer at the same time.

What would this second offer need to include to beat the one on the table?

More money?

Better hours?

More responsibility?

Whatever it is, get specific.

Then ask yourself:

How likely is it that you’ll find that second offer if you keep looking?

This exercise is really helpful because we tend to fixate on what’s missing in an offer, rather than what it gives us.

Let’s say the offer meets 90% of what you’re looking for.

The remaining 10% may start to feel like a dealbreaker.

It’s fine to wonder about the 10%, as long as you’re honest about how long you’re willing to search to get it.

No one can answer this but you.

But this exercise can bring a bit of clarity when your head’s spinning with what-ifs.
