Extreme ownership is the concept that we are solely responsible for our actions. Some things will happen outside of our control, but we can choose the way we respond.
Our growth depends on our level of ownership, and our level of ownership will show up in the language we use. If we’re not comfortable with taking ownership, our language defaults to “You”.
“You know what people say…”
“You know what it’s like…”
“Yeah but You did that…”
Extreme ownership can be confronting because it means starting with “I”.
“I was wrong…”
“I am responsible…”
“I need to change…”
As an exercise, try to notice what language you use, particularly when things aren’t going well or you feel under pressure. If you find you’re saying “you” a lot, try using “I” instead.
