Industry trends

I get this question a lot when presenting at conferences for professional groups:

In the next 5 years, what is the industry trend that will be most significant for my career?

This is my usual response:

There will be lots of trends that come and go throughout your career, and no one really knows which trends will happen or what their impact will be.

But a better way of thinking about this question is, “How is my career likely to change over the next 5 years?”.

For example, if you are 25 years old, then in the next 5 years it’s very likely that you’ll go from not managing anyone to managing others, and this role is very different to the work you’re currently doing.

So instead of trying to be across every trend and industry change, consider the big changes you would like to make in your career, and then best prepare yourself for those changes.

Ben and Bec have taken me through the QLA Framework over the past 12 months. It is with sobering gratitude that I can reflect on the past year and say wholeheartedly that I've managed to gain all of the above with QLA’s help.

The Quarter Life Framework is so simple, yet so powerful. I tend to overcomplicate things and burden myself with a lot of different problems to make sure everything is working. The Framework allowed me to simply get clear on what I actually wanted. It allowed me to be more laser-focused on the actions that would help me get to where I want to.

QLA took away a lot of the pressure and stress I was feeling, and helped me understand if my interests were just whims or if they were the right paths for me to take.
