Is being a manager a STEP UP or a STEP DOWN?

Yesterday’s Opinion Dominion results are in:

75% said STEP UP

25% said STEP DOWN

It’s a strong lean towards management being a step up, and I agree.

Becoming a manager isn’t a finish line.

It’s a gateway.

You move from executing the work to shaping what work gets done.

You gain influence and unlock opportunities.

And you should see a financial upside that compounds over time (If you don’t, that’s a red flag!)

But the 25% who said “step down” are worth listening to.

Because there’s been a shift recently:

Fewer professionals are aspiring towards management.

It’s not because they lack ambition.

It’s because they’ve seen poor leadership, unclear rewards and unnecessary pressure, and are opting out.

That’s something every company needs to understand when planning succession and support.

You shouldn’t ever assume that your employees are motivated by a linear path.

So don’t decide their future careers for them.
