Yesterday’s Opinion Dominion asked:
Is it better to be a SPECIALIST or a GENERALIST?
41% said Specialist
59% said Generalist
I went Specialist.
When you specialise in the right area, your value can scale exponentially.
The better you get, the more in-demand you become and the more leverage you have.
But to be a Specialist, you must constantly appreciate what happens if your skill is automated away or no longer in demand.
There’s an irony here, as I’d probably say my overall career arc has been more of a generalist.
I made the conscious decision to stop specialising in my chosen professional field and I’ve enjoyed moving across disciplines.
But I chose Specialist in the Opinion Dominion because of the exponential value I enjoyed as a Specialist within my chosen field (and this can mean a lot for your own career too).
Overall, the key is being clear on where you want to create the most value.
Here’s today’s question:
👉 What is HARDER? Starting a job or leaving a job?
