I have a controversial opinion about the news which is strongly challenged when I share it.
These days, I believe news is another form of entertainment.
News has traditionally been seen as an unbiased source of important information.
When I’ve shared this opinion with others who consume news regularly, they can admit that news outlets are perhaps more biased now than before, but they feel like they can see through this bias.
But how is that possible?
Everything we consume in the news has been shaped by layers of choices:
- Someone selects a topic as “newsworthy”.
- They then decide which part of that topic to focus on.
- They then present it from a particular perspective.
And then we’re deciding which news source to consume out of all the sources out there.
Even so, the main reason I believe news is entertainment is how I feel after consuming it.
To me, it feels very similar to binging TV.
I can watch a series or YouTube for ages, and then wonder where the time has gone and what I gained from doing so.
I get the same sensation when I scroll the news.
For news to be informative, I feel that it should be changing how I think and behave.
And again, maybe this is just me, but I feel like I’m now just consuming news on auto-pilot.
And any changes that are happening don’t feel great…
That’s why I try to make a deliberate effort to limit my news intake and be more intentional with what I consume.
Whether you agree with me or not, I encourage you to consider your relationship with the news.
How do you consume your news?
Does this align with why you seek out the news in the first place?
