Is this your problem to fix?

When someone shares a problem with you, it can be tempting to make their problem yours and try to fix it for them.

If this is your typical response, it’s good to consider how it’s best serving you and them.

First, the person may be looking for a friendly ear, rather than needing a solution.

If they are needing a solution, it doesn’t mean they are asking you to take on this problem.

If they are asking you to take on this problem, it may be because they don’t have the awareness or confidence that they are able to fix it (or know of others better suited to do so).

And then if they directly ask for you to fix this problem, it’s always good to consider your own capacity before agreeing to make this problem yours.
