It is your problem

Success in life can sometimes depend more on managing the downside risk than the upside risk.

So if you can sense something negative could happen around you, and the risk is not your responsibility, what do you do?

You can choose to ignore the risk and let whoever is responsible manage it. And then if the downside eventuates you can say “It wasn’t my fault” or “I wasn’t responsible for that” or “Someone else was in charge”.

All of these statements would be accurate and you may not get blamed.

But you’ll still bear a cost from the problem. Others will still be affected. You’ll be in a worse position than if the problem hadn’t occurred. And you’ll know you could have done something about it.

So while you may not be directly responsible for managing a particular risk, it’s in your best interest to consider your exposure to it and influence the situation if you can (considerately, of course). If it’s within your control to have a positive impact then you should act.

It may not be your responsibility, but it is your problem.
