When you see an iceberg floating, you’re only looking at 10% of it – the rest of it is hidden below the water.
I feel the same goes with job descriptions.
When you’re applying for jobs, you’re only getting a snapshot of what the role really involves.
You won’t really know what the culture is like, or how things are done, or who you’ll be working with.
And yet you’re expected to make a long-term commitment.
This is why it’s important to treat job applications as discovery exercises, where you want to find out as much about the role as possible before you commit.
And if you accept a position, you should remain open to switching if what’s below the surface isn’t favourable.
