When you’re trying to work out how to move forward with a matter in your life, get a piece of paper and create two columns.
Title one side “Known Knowns”, and the other side “Known Unknowns”.
“Known Knowns” are all the things you know that you know about the matter. You may list what you want or you don’t want. Or you may list the facts, or the things that won’t change. Basically put down everything you have clarity on.
The “Known Unknowns” are all the things you know that you don’t know about the matter. List things that are relevant to the decision, but you need answers or further information before you can comfortably proceed.
This exercise helps to categorise all the thoughts and emotions going on in your head. Once you dump everything onto the page, it’s much easier to identify the potential paths and make a choice to move forward.
