Many people in their 20s and 30s think about starting a business or a side hustle. If you’re considering this, I’d encourage you to understand your reasons for running a business before diving down this path.
This is because running a business is very different to delivering a product or a service. Let’s say you’re a physio that’s just finished uni and you’re keen to start your own clinic. You may expect to be spending most of your time helping patients, but a lot of your time will actually be spent running the business (which your uni degree won’t prepare you for).
It’s also helpful to understand if the benefits you expect to gain from a business can be achieved elsewhere. You may want more independence, or influence, or money – but you don’t need to run a business to achieve these things. And in fact a business may result in you achieving the opposite of what you were hoping for.
Owning and running a business is a fantastic endeavour for those that are really clear on what they want and understand that having their own business is the best way to achieve it. I decided to go down this path after a lot of consideration and I’m really glad that I did, as it’s been both rewarding and challenging.
If you like the idea of owning a business but are not sure what it may involve, reach out to people that are doing what you’re aspiring towards and ask for their candid feedback. I’d be delighted to talk with you about your aspirations if you’d like to reach out.
