We are uncomfortable with silence during conversations.
We only allow for a second or two of silence between each other, and if a break is any longer one side will rush in to speak.
If you can be comfortable sitting with silence, the other person will help you understand them a lot more.
They will share more about how they’re feeling.
They will share more about a problem.
They will share more about what they want.
Try this today. When you ask someone a question about a meaningful matter, after their response remain silent for a few seconds with a thoughtful and considerate expression. It’s likely they will choose to expand on their first answer.
