I want to share a story about the Michael Hill jewellers you see across New Zealand and Australia.
During his 20s and 30s, Michael Hill worked in his uncle’s jewellery shop in a small New Zealand town.
He had no major ambitions with this job, and his ultimate passion was building a dream home with his wife.
They put everything into this home, though shortly after this labour of love was completed, a fire consumed it.
While watching the house burn down, Michael realised that nothing in life was permanent, and resolved to throw himself into the jewellery business.
He was 40 at the time.
He initially wanted to buy out his uncle’s business, but when his uncle refused he set up his own.
He then set a goal to open 7 stores in 7 years, which he met.
He then set another goal to open 70 stores in 7 years, which he met.
He has since been succeeded by his daughter as Chair of the business, and there are currently around 280 stores across Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
There are a few things you can take away from this story, but what stood out for me was how Michael Hill spent 23 years doing something he was good at but held off on having a crack until a significant life event.
Can you draw parallels between this story and your own?
Do you also want to do something significant with your career or your business?
If so, do you really need to wait for a major life event to go after it?
