When you’re in a relationship, it’s important to spend time together in sustainable ways that break up your usual routine.
I’ve written before about the mid-week date nights that Bec and I share. This works well as a consistent space in our week which is dedicated just to us.
But what do we do when it’s not a Wednesday night? We want to feel like we’re coming together meaningfully throughout the week, but it’s impractical to keep carving out slots in our calendar.
What we’ve found works really well is monthly adventures.
Every month has a theme which serves as a default for us to connect.
Our current adventure is walking the entire coastline where we live. This shared activity allows us to be proactive around our connection, and puts us in a position which is different to our normal lives and we both enjoy.
It also means that we’re not defaulting to just watching shows on Netflix.
We’ve found that a month is long enough for the adventure to feel novel but also build a sense of accomplishment.
And the great thing about this approach is you don’t need to be in a relationship to apply this to your life.
Take some time to consider the adventures you can have by yourself or with others. To help with your thinking, you could cook a particular cuisine for a month, or learn a new skill, or simply try an experience that you normally wouldn’t. Try it for a month and see how you go.
