Chris Stuckmann is a movie reviewer on YouTube I’ve been following for quite a while.
He’s gained quite an audience, mainly because he’s a passionate amateur filmmaker at heart.
Since 2011 he’s been reviewing movies, and the only direct asks he’s made of his audience is to go into theatres and watch particular movies.
Then on 1 March 2022, he launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund his own feature film.
After years of providing ongoing value to his audience, he cashed in his chips and made one big ask of his audience – Can you help?
The Kickstarter campaign was for 25 days, and he set a funding goal of $250,000.
This was hit on the 1st day.
He then made a stretch goal of $600,000.
This was hit on the 19th day.
By the end of the campaign, 14,720 backers pledged $1,390,845.
If you keep providing lots of value without asking much in return, your goodwill will compound over time.
But just because you gain a lot of goodwill, you can’t just ask for anything.
If Chris Stuckmann had simply asked people to give him money for the sake of it, he wouldn’t have raised $1.4 million.
It was because his audience was invested in his journey as a filmmaker, that they not only wanted to support him make this film but also watch it themselves. And the more they gave, the more features Chris could add to the film.
So with your career, consider the network that you’re fostering overtime.
Imagine the big ask you can make if you keep giving and giving and giving?
