Pack up your (remote) desk

I’ve been working remotely for 6 years now.

While I don’t have a formal office, I still find it really valuable to “pack up” my desk at the end of each day.

You may wonder why, given how light my setup is.

But there are two reasons I do this, which I hope you’ll find useful if you’re also working remotely.

The first reason is the more obvious one – clear desk, clear mind.

But the second reason is more valuable for me.

If I pack my laptop away, it disrupts my pattern of going to do more work.

You may be experiencing this yourself.

I find it super super easy to justify jumping onto my laptop if it’s within reach.

And many times there’s no important reason at all for doing so!

It’s just the most unproductive habit ever.

So if I put my laptop away, I can still go and get it, but the barrier is much greater.
