In any job you do, there will be work that is useful and work that is pointless.
If you want to progress in your career, you need to be hyper aware of which is which so you can be selective.
Sometimes you’ll do work that you think is useful but turns out to be pointless, and that’s ok.
But I’d wager there’s a lot of work you’re doing right now that isn’t useful at all.
And you’re doing this pointless work for arbitrary reasons:
- It’s what’s always been done
- It’s good to be busy
- I was told it’s important
Today, I encourage you to identify the recurring tasks you’re doing that serve no real purpose.
If you’re hesitant to stop them outright, treat it like an experiment.
Pause the work and see what happens.
You might be surprised by how little it matters.
What’s the most pointless task you’ve seen in a workplace?
